Go Red Luncheon
According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. That’s approximately one woman every minute! Furthermore, in 2010, the American Heart Association set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020. Since 2015, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has partnered with the American Heart Association to increase awareness and educate women on the plight of preventing heart disease in women: “The Silent Killer.” Since 2018, the Anniston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated became a loudspeaker for women’s heart health awareness.
Thus, the Physical and Mental Health Committee of the Anniston Alumnae Chapter presents the National Day of Red for Women Luncheon and Health Fair each year as a community-wide event. Video presentations are displayed to emphasize the importance of women working together and sharing their stories about heart disease and its effects on society. At each event, nearly 200 individuals take advantage of the various health screenings and educational materials while also dining on a heart healthy lunch.

Relay for Life
Relay for Life is a fundraising event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Each year there are thousands of relays that take place. This fundraiser’s goal is to help raise money for cancer research. The relay is composed of several different events: fundraising, opening ceremony, survivor and caregiver recognition, celebrations, lighting the luminaria, and the closing ceremony.
Cancer is something that affects all communities; therefore, the Anniston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta participates in the Calhoun County Relay for Life. Sorors use this opportunity as another way to help give back to the community as well as honor our Sorors who have fought cancer and/or served as a caregiver for a loved one with cancer. “Cancer won’t quit so neither can we.”
